A Work of Artifice

In the poem “A Work Of Artifice” it is about women’s rights. The poem talks about how women would be able to make it just as far as men if there were given the chance. If women were not pushed down and “planted” the same way as men. The poem talks about how there are more meant to be more and cozy kind of looked down upon.

Incident

What accounts for the effectiveness of the last stanza? Comment on the title. Is it in the key with the meaning of the poem?

What made the last stanza effective was that there was nothing else that the boy remembered. The boy only remember that one incident (Witch is that title of the poem). It shows that you only remember that bad things that happen to you even if they are as small as a word.

To His Coy Mistress

3. Outline the speaker's argument in three sentences that begin with the words If, But, and Therefore. Is the argument valid?

If he had all of the time in the world he would devote it to the mistress, but he does not have all o f the time is the world. Therefore the mistress is hard to get.

4/21

4. What does the final stanza say about the nature of the poem? Is physical power finally destructive or affirmative?

The last stanza is saying don’t fight you will all end up dead. The nature of the poem is good nature.. It is trying to tell you advice. The physical power in the end is affirmative. It is saying not to be destructive.

1. Of the six images, 5 are similes. Which is a metaphor? Comment on its position and its effectiveness.

The metaphor is “What happens to a dream deferred”. Its position in the poem is the very first line. It is a good position because it is a metaphor then off of it is 5 similes. It is a great affect with the poem.

Bereft

1. Describe the situation precisely. What time of day and year is it? Where is the speaker? What is happening to the weather?

The situation is a man on a beach or looking out on his beach house. He is looking out at a storm. He here’s all of the thunder and the waves crashing in from shore. It is in the summer at night. The speaker is on a beach. The weather is getting bad, but only for a short period of time then it will clear up by the morning

The Hound

1. I read the poem
2. Equivocal-1. Allowing the possibility of several different meanings, as a word or phrase, esp. with intent to deceive or misguide; susceptible of double interpretation; deliberately ambiguous: an equivocal answer.
3. The speaker is a man that is looking at a dog and trying to be friends with it. The man does not know very many people so he is trying to find a friend.
4. The situation is a man that is trying to make a friend. He wants to care for the dog. He is not too sure if the dog wants the same thing as he does.
5. The tone of the poem is happy yet sad. It is a man that is trying to make a friend. The poem is more sad then anything because the dog does not like him.
6. The speaker is a man that is looking at a dog and trying to be friends with it. The man does not know very many people so he is trying to find a friend.
7. The tone of the poem is happy yet sad. It is a man that is trying to make a friend. The poem is more sad then anything because the dog does not like him.

Women Work

It seems like the speaker is overwhelmed with work to do. It also seems like she might not have a husband because she has so much to do. It seems like she has to support the whole family with out the help of a husband. If she does have a husband she is over worked because she is doing everything around the house

Those Winter Sundays

4. Winter Sundays is about a father who provides for his family. They family never really thanks him but he still does it. He is a hombol man that does not mind providing for his family, he just wants his family to be worm.

Hazel Tells LaVerne

It is ironic that you think that the frog is going to turn him in to a prince but really he is just thought of as a pervert. The frog also came out of the swear but yet he still kissed it.

We real cool: The reason why the poem was banned in some schools was because of the line "We real cool. We left school". Teachers want to encourage students that it is cool to stay in school.

Richard Cory: The reason that Richard Cory killed him self in the end is because he was allows looked at as perfect. He wanted to just fit in like every one else. He did not want to be looked at like a god. He got tired of it so he shot him self.

Good Times: The difference between the good times in my family and the good times in "Good Times" is that there version of a good time is just getting by. They are happy if they are able to make rent and support there family. They also think that it is fun to be drunk all of the time.

A Study of Reading Habits

1. The three stanzas delineates three stages in the speakers life. Describe each.

In the first stanza he likes books. He gets exited to read stories about hero's and it makes him feel good about him self. In the second stanza he still reads, but he changed from reading about hero's to vampires. He starts to look badly upon himself talking about his glasses. In the third stanza he hates books and he looks at him self badly as a nerd. He says that he would rather get drunk then read books.

2. What kind of person is the speaker? What kinds of books does he read? May we identify him with poet?

At the beginning the speaker is a nerdy person. One that does not have very many friends and sits at home reading. At the end he realizes that he does not like the person that he has become and stops reading. The speaker at the beginning reads books about hero's and adventure. At the end he reads more about killing then he stops. I do not think he is considered a poet.

Is my team plowing/ mirror

In is my team plowing the 3 different types of sleep that is says are talking about 3 different people. Some people are better off then other's they get to go to sleep with no worries. The others have to go to sleep thinking about tomorrow. There are two meanings to bed. The first is go to bed the other is the object bed.

A mirror is like a person because it gets tired of things just like a person. It does not like to do the same thing over and over. The mirror and humans both have hearts. The mirror is both loved and disliked like a human. The mirror is unlike a person because it is silver and have no preconceptions it is never cruel always truth humans are never like that. Humans never stay in one place but, the mirror does.
The mirror is like the lake because people both look at them. They both have no feelings.

#2 List the elements of the poem that seem not beautiful and therefore "unpoetic." Are there any elements of beauty in the poem?

What makes the poem "unpoetic" it is that it is about war. It is not about a nice kind of war. It goes into deep description of people dying. The poem is to graphic to show beauty. The only line that i can see beauty is line 15. It is talking about dreaming for the war to end

#1 Who are the two speakers? What is the situation? Why are the second speaker's words enclosed in parentheses?

The two speaker are a mother and a daughter/son. The situation is the mother just came back from the store and the daughter/son is hungry. The family seems poor so the mother does not want the son to have food.
